Reese Witherspoon is a mom. Nicole Kidman is a mom. I’m a mom. And that’s all we needed to bond. On Wednesday at a secret screening-room in West Hollywood, we gathered together to talk about a new movement to create complex roles for women, that grown-up female viewers will want to watch. Fulfilling for both the women working in media & also the women consuming it. What a concept right? And they pulled it off in a BIG way.
BIG LITTLE LIES
Digital influencers and Hollywood creatives sat in a small theatre together & empowered each other to keep focussed on making quality entertainment “For Women, By Women”. BigLittle Lies is an example of the great things we can accomplish if we don’t give up & believe in each other. That’s the power of women working together- In Reese’s words.
On a mission to create compelling female-centric programming, Reese Witherspoon’s production shingle HELLO SUNSHINE came upon a book they believed had something special that should be shared on screen. The writer, Liane Moriarty, is an Australian author. Reese’s partner Bruna Papandrea is Australian, and hopped on the phone with Nicole Kidman, who was in Australia at the time. Next thing they knew Nicole was having coffee with Liane. Just 18 months later, we were about to watch the first 2 episodes of HBO’s limited series Big Little Lies.
Reese Witherspoon & Nicole Kidman
These two moms are so poised, approachable, and driven. I’ve personally been inspired by Reese for quite some time. I’m excited that there is this dedicated group of moms in Hollywood that are going to change things, make things that matter, and affect this industry for the better.. for generations to come. I’m proud to be a part of this group.
I also have to let you know that I happily put my feet up and dove into the first 2 episodes of this series, which (2 glasses of wine later) has become my new “me time” addiction.
February 19th HBO Releases All 7 Episodes of Big Little Lies
Nicole will encourage you to watch all 7 in a row because it’s meant to be consumed that way- Like a movie. It’s beautifully shot. It looks like a film made for the big screen. The performances are obviously stunning, with an Oscar winning cast. Plus fresh talent that you’ll recognize from some of your other favorite shows. I was riveted watching Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Isabella Kravitz & the sweet Kathryn Newton who I love following on Instagram.
It was a raining in LA on Wednesday. That usually means nobody goes anywhere & flat-hair prevails. But the moms came out in full-force & supported, chatted, shared stories, & promised to keep on moving forward to make important programming for women. For Moms.
I’ll be blogging for our community on MomsInMedia.com about the latest insider scoop from Reese Witherspoon’s production company & the new deal she just did to expand her company into a major Digital Content Creator. It’s such exciting stuff. And I love that Moms are proudly at the forefront!
For the juicy details, watch on Feb 19th. It’s like nothing I’d ever seen before. It’s relatable real-life situations
mixed with total fantasy-life at the same time. Real family problems, mixed emotions, marriage secrets, & even a …. murder. Stephen King himself called the book “scary”. BigLittle Lies is so much fun to watch- I really hope you check it out & share this post with your Mommy-friends. Like Reese said, the way to show you want Hollywood to make more programming like this is to watch it. Watch & show them this is what we want to see more of.
Let me know if you’ve read these books below in the comments. Are you a fan already? And Please tell me how you liked the HBO show next week. We’re all in this together & it’s making things so much better in this town because of it.
Thank you to Reese, Nicole, Hello Sunshine, HBO & Liane Moriarty for getting together & believing in us Moms & making great entertainment for us to watch. Cheers to you ladies!

You need to make your own online profile because -Whoa buddy!- you do NOT want the internet to do it for you. Here’s how you can take control of your online profile in 3 easy steps to master the mystery of: How To Best Represent Yourself Online
Be consistent with your name.
Be clear about your message.
Be sure to match your appearance with your perception.
When I chose to go into radio & take a job on-air instead of pursuing TV News, I thought I would never be in front of a camera. I was so wrong.
I’m still shocked by the amount of on-camera work I had to be able to do as a Radio DJ. Hosting a morning show meant we traveled all over. We shot video promos on-location. We shot green-screen in our studios. I booked commercials that required a Digital Overlay (that’s when you open a web page and a tiny person walks onto your screen and starts talking to you). We taped Christmas Specials for local TV stations. We were constantly joining our Morning TV News “sister station” to cross promote. I did a ton of in-person events, appearances, and “Van Hits”. I found myself on stage at Nokia Theatre and LA Live, to Valley View Casino and Caesars Palace. And all of that was just my persona #IRL.
In Real Life.
There is also an entirely different “digital persona” too. My Social Media persona, and everybody has one. You have one, whether you know it or not.
At first my online presence was specifically to enhance my Love Songs Radio Show in San Diego. It was a great way to interact in real-time with listeners who had stories to share and dedications to make. But as everything was going digital, including the way radio played music, we had to embrace bigger roles as personalities online.
Did you know most entertainers are contractually obligated to achieve a certain level of social media activity? It’s all part of the job now. Many are given bonuses for reaching certain goals. Get so many retweets and get a bonus. Get so many followers and get a bonus. Get higher numbers and become more valuable. You get it.
I learned how important my online presence was while I was learning -as we all were- how to promote myself & my persona, online. It’s a vital part of being in media, no matter at what level you are operating. Just remember this: Everybody always Googles everybody.
The Moms In Media Practical Guide: How To Handle Your Online Presence #LikeABoss
#1 Be consistent with your name.
Believe me, I should know. (My close friends are laughing right now.) Let me recommend to you: Pick a name and stick with it.
It’s hard for some people. If you don’t struggle with this then you probably think we are crazy. How hard can it be to settle on a name? My name has changed so many times that my friends have me in their contacts lists under “Kris” or “Kristin” followed by any number of name combinations.
When I came to LA on the radio, my name changed again, & it was the last time. Done. I’m Kristin Cruz on ALL social media platforms & email. If your name is not on your business email, please create one now. Drop the UnicornBunny365@Hotmail.com email addy, please. If you have a goofy hard-to-remember name on Instagram, please change it. Your name is your brand. Make it good. And make it stick.
“If you‘re going to work that hard, it should be for something with your name on it.” –Rachel Ray
#2 Be clear about your message.
What’s your message? What do you want to say? What’s your personal One-Liner that sums things up your work. Your thang. What is it? Figure that our. (Know that it can change, pivot & grow as you go.) Please pick a focus & own it. Then be an expert in it. And now you make it better than anything else out there because it has your unique stamp on it. You’ve become synonymous with that vibe, that logo, that energy. And if you are clear about it, then the right people will know how to find you, & believe me THEY WILL.
Not sure what your message should be or what your passion is? Try attending a conference with like-minded women (who I swear will become mentors & friends) like The MOMFair, ConnectHER, or Mom 2.0.
“If you build it, they will come.” -Kevin Costner’s character in Field of Dreams
#3 Be sure to match your appearance with your perception.
Ever heard the line “Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have?” Or how about “Look the part.”? That’s about projecting the image you want others to recognize you by. Your best food forward (there’s another memorable line!), is your visual representation that pops up on all the screens all over the planet when your name is typed into a computer. With that said; It had better look good!
Chose a look & have a professional picture taken. Be comfortable. Be you. And have great lighting 😉
You can’t lose by going to a pro for this & it doesn’t have to break the bank. You’ve seen my new pictures for 2017. I took these at BLINK Inc which is a modern photo studio built for busy people. I like to update my pics often. I know how important my image is. I’ve had many shoots in my life-It’s been a part of my job. I remember one fancy photo session that was paid for by a big company who employed me, & it was in Hollywood with makeup artists & swanky digs. The pics ended up to be fine, but didn’t look anything like me! The vibe didn’t represent our show at all. My bosses threw them all in the trash. And they paid a pretty penny for that whole thing.
I’m a believer that YOU are the most important part of your pictures. They need to look like you & give off the right vibe. (Yes, you have a “vibe”.) Just like an actor needs a headshot that looks like her when she arrives for that commercial audition, you need a “headshot” that looks like you when you meet your clients, or fans, or new friends from online to real life. Never misrepresent yourself. It just makes for trouble down the line. I have seen some crazy things in my time. I always play by this rule & it has served me well.
BLINK Inc is a recommend because it’s fast, good, and affordable. I booked my sessions entirely online, from my kitchen while making breakfast for the kids. For this latest shoot I brought the whole family, except the dog. But they told me that they actually do shoot pets too! Next time I am so brining my Chihuahua. How fun will those pics be?!
I love my Woodland Hills location because it’s in the Westfield Topangamall (*Mom does the happy dance*). The session only took 2o minutes. The photog made us all feel comfortable. And yes, we totally ate at the Food Court when we were through (& of course I took a stroll through Nordstrom). It doesn’t get easier than that. The price is right. I was very pleased because I have personally paid hundreds of dollars for headshot photographers in the past. After the Blink Inc shoot I don;t have to schedule another appointment to meet with the photog to go over the proof sheets. Instead, all of the proofs are instantly available online. I review & only pay for the photos you want.
“How you first meet the public is how the industry sees you..” -Meryl Streep
Good luck & have FUN! That is the most important part. If you are having a good time, everybody can see it on your face. Post below your success story, or tips. We want to see your new headshots too!
When you receive 2 dozen beautiful eggs delivered delicately to your doorstep, you need to figure out what to make that is as special as they are. Scrambled and fried, of course that’s always good. Hard boiled for snacks on-the-go. Mashed into the perfect egg salad sandwich spread with pickled relish. But our favorite way to use up eggs, while making the whole family happiest (including moms who don’t reeeeeally love cooking) is with: FRENCH TOAST!
Who better to ask for a simple, healthy, and quick family recipe for French Toast than our fellow mom on the other coast, Jessica Seinfeld.
Her cookbooks are a mom’s best friend in the kitchen. She’s the one who showed us that we could puree veggies ahead of time so they’d be ready to squirt into just about ANY recipe we make during the week. The crafty little way to enhance our kids’ meals, that they never saw comin’! (Didn’t taste the difference either!) When I first discovered the trick, I swear I was standing a little bit taller in the kitchen that night. Feeling like I scored a win for “Team Mom”.
You might be getting eggs from a home-delivery service too. What busy mom hasn’t tried one, or wanted to try on? Milk and Eggs does it differently by sourcing locally and going directly to the farmers. By doing this, there is no middleman, and the savings are passed along to the customer and we get fresher foods at about %50 less cost than in the traditional grocery stores. Delivery is free. And right now there is a %10 percent off pop-up offer on their website for first time visitors.
Here’s what our Editor At Large made with her 2 dozen eggs. Breakfast for Dinner, on the fly, thanks to Jessica Seinfeld’s simply delicious recipe for her most requested FRENCH TOASTvia InStyle Magazine
2 large eggs 1
cup low-fat or whole milk
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
4 1-inch-thick slices challah or French bread (or whole wheat bread)
1 tbsp unsalted butter
Fresh berries, maple syrup, or confectioners’ sugar, for serving
1. Crack the eggs into a large baking dish (choose one that’s large enough to hold the bread slices in a single layer). Add the milk, vanilla, and cinnamon and whisk together.
2. Slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices (if not presliced) and add to the egg mixture. Let them soak for a minute, then flip each piece and let soak a minute more until saturated.
3. Place a large skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium. Add the butter. Once it’s melted, swirl the skillet so the butter coats the bottom. Let the excess egg mixture drip off of each slice of bread, then add the bread to the skillet (you may have to cook in batches if your bread is too wide to fit all 4 slices in at once). Listen for a nice sizzle. When you hear that, cook until the undersides are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Carefully flip and cook until golden on the second side, 2 to 3 minutes more.
4. Serve with your favorite toppings.
Mom Actress Alyson Hannigan brought her passion for helping kids and her love of the FabKids brand, together to create a special Christmas for children in Mexico. The celeb mommy has teamed up with FabKids.com, which is a site we love to shop at here in the office and recommend to Mom-friends.
The name may “FabKids” may sound familiar if you already have a shopping account with Just Fab or Fabletics. It’s all under the same lovely amazingly cool “Google Campus-like” office building in El Segundo, CA. Trust us and go find a friend-of-a-friend who works there to invite you to lunch sometime! Inside those offices it feels like a moving breathing fashion magazine / slash / tech company, come to life. And it’s no wonder they are the leading membership-based children’s fashion service and personalized shopping site around. They all really know what’s hip and what a girl really wants. We really want to have lunch their again sometime (& we’ll post a bunch of pics so you can see what we’re talking about!). The entire organization has this positive energy and great vision.
More Than Half A Million Dollars-Worth of FabKids Clothing And Accessories Will Go To Orphaned and Abandoned Children In Baja, Mexico
Because we love both the players and the focus of this charitable idea, we had to help get the word out about it. Tons of clothing and accessories are headed to Corazón de Vida, which is a for-purpose organization that provides life changing support for orphaned and abandoned children in Baja, Mexico. They’ve been helping the children of this region for over 20 years.
“As a mother, I can’t think of anything more important than providing children basic necessities and empowering them for a better future. Corazon de Vida does exactly that, and I’ve seen their impact.” -Alyson Hannigan
Aly got the entire fam in the mix as they prepped to ship Christmas cheer to the children who really needed it most. They opened their home and she literally turned it into a bustling “Santa’s Workshop” here in LA. As the holidays wrap up, the gift-giving doesn’t have to. You can join in like Aly’s family has, and participate in bringing more help to this incredible charity. Thanks again to FabKids for letting us peek inside to see the magic happen. We’re so happy to help spread the good word & the holiday cheer.
From the bottom of our hearts we all wish you JOY, PEACE & HOPE for the New Year.

Aimee Helfand (middle) is a Producer & Mom who turned her success in Hollywood, into a thriving YouTube network called Baby League with millions of views, and now a second ALL NEW channel called FamiLeague!
When it comes to Motherhood, I’ve found that what worked for me in the boardroom, doesn’t always work in the baby’s room. There are SO many things that applied in the office, and then later don’t mean squat when you become a mother. Right? Your degrees. Your business cards with that well-thoughtout title. Your sleek email signature. Your on-point Power Points. And a million other things you’ve earned, learned & perfected through the years. I was shocked when I realized that I could flip the switch on a mic and talk to millions of listeners on teh radio, but I couldn’t figure out how to get a poopie pamper into the Diaper Geenie in full panic-mode!
Motherhood saw me getting off the elevator at the end of a workday and just *HAHAHAHAHA* laughed in my face. I juggled work & mom-life at home while trying to manage my split personality. It can meess with your head, & definitly with your fashion choices (and makeup routine). I even feel like sometimes it’s still waiting for me to trip so it can bring me down to the level and make me change into comfort sneakers.
Okay Motherhood, you win that one.
But, I decided to take a moment, before continuing to the employee parking lot. I’m looked Motherhood right in the face and using these work-skills I’ve developed to slay it at home. Sometimes it works! Other times, I laugh at myself and learn a new lesson. The lesson of how not to take yourself too seriously 😉
Working a Red Carpet is a lot like Preschool.
When you send him off for his first day of Pre-School, you dress him up in something you’ve had planned for a long time. You talk about how much fun they’re going to have. You tell them “It’s OK” to be a little bit nervous. And you remind him how fun it will be to meet new interesting people, and new friends.
That’s not so unlike getting ready to do a Red Carpet event. This is a legit career parallel. Nervous mixed with excited. New outfits and new friends. And just like the parents, everybody is taking lots of pictures!
This weekend Laura Nickerson and I will be working the Red Carpet and playing with new friends, reuniting with neighborhood friends, and interviewing a huge line-up of incredible people at THE LA BABY SHOW.
Now was your baby nervous for their first day of preschool? Nah. A little seperation anxiety for some kids who want to stay near Mama. But they are usually curious and excited! They didn’t know what was coming, but it looked like it could be fun, and there was a new place to explore and things to see. That’s kind of like how Laura and I don’t get as much “nervous” as we do EXCITED excited to go out on the Red Carpet and play!
Sure, our camera and mic is alot bigger than an iPhone, and I’m not sure I’m probably not going to be singing about Gymbo the clowd. But, there will be lots of bright colors, fabulous outfits, yummy snacks and even goodie bags. (That’s my favorite part!)
Make sure that if you are coming to LA BABY SHOW, you come visit us, because there are fantastic places where you can kick up your feet and relax. (Now that’s something that toddlers rarely do.) This is mom-specific experience that we have worked really hard to create for you VIP influencers. It’s called the MomAngeles Lounge. I know there will be some incredible brands in there like Babyganics, Bugaboo, ClubMomme, Munchkin, and Good Goods with toys and freebies! Nail Garden is bringing manicures. Burke Williams is bringing massages. I’m taking some time in there for sure, and you should too. Get to know these brands and luxuriate. We’ve worked so hard, and totally deserve it.
Of course there’s a Lactation Lounge hosted by my friends The Pump Station. I don’t know anyone better than them to host this kind of lounge. They are the ones that actually helped me when I sent my husband to go rent my first pump eight years ago. That was the begining of many many times they help me as a new mother and all along the way. [Over half a million people have watched this hilarious video of Pump Station and my guest GloZell – posted below.]
We have hundreds of incredible brands setting up tables right now downtown getting ready for parents to check them out. Harmonie from POP Your Shop is sending me updates every hour! This is the biggest baby show in the whole nation. And I know lots of media is planning to be there to cover it all and to be a part of it. Celebs like GloZell, Ali Fedotowsky, Nicole Feliciano, Wendy Burch, Brooke Burke, just to name a few, are planning to spand the day with us tomorrow. Seriously, LA BABY SHOW will be the coolest thing you do this weekend. Get your tix for Saturday and Sunday now! [20% off discount here.]
Just like a toddler on the first day of Preschool, I can’t wait to get in there & have fun!
And to the new moms, just so you know… You may not be looking forward to your little one’s first day of school. It’s sad. They’re growing up too fast already. I get it. But TRUST ME. You’ll soon be sitting in your car in the parking lot, alone, going “OMG. What am I going to do with 3 hours of free time?” and then cheering and dancing around like a fool usually follows 😉
I hope to see you this weekend for a lot of fun, freebies and playing with friends! Please tune in to our Facebook page for life video surprises and behind the scenes hilarity from Kristin and Laura. Thanks for having us host yet another #BestOfLA event for parents!
Molly Sims dazzles on the red carpet & on TV, but she spends her regular life as a busy mom who is concerned about our schools just like us (& maybe in yoga pants & a top-knot too?) The Supermodel mom showed up for LA’s Best UnWINEdLA event Friday night at Casa Del Mar to show her support for the wonderful work being done there to help our schools & kids in need. Stepping inside the west side party, it was a night filled with fun, fundraising & fine dining.
LA’s Best now helps almost 200 schools create highly impactful after-school programs that have a specific goal. Here’s the plan: Kids get a safe place to go on-campus after school. That’s #1. In there, they get help with their homework, a nutritious snack, and an activity that’s FUN! Doesn’t reading the description just put a smile on your face?
You can get involved all year long, & stay in the loop on upcoming events. The LA’s Best events are a good time for sure! But you can also become a Best Friend anytime with a donation & sharing about the cause. We also think this is a great way to get your business or brand involved in bettering the community. Companies like Dry Bar, Stila, Gelsons, The Standard Hotel, Lenny & Larry’s Vegan Cookies, Caffe Luxe & so many more helped to sponsor last week’s event.
Moms In Media feels like LA’s Best is a big hug for our kids who really need this expertly provided service, every single day of the school year. We think there work is vital. They spread support, awareness, love, friendship & the importance of community. Get a mom at school, or your neighbor, & let’s come together with LA’s Best to bring the best school experience to all LA families.
Special shout-out to the famous families who helped get some media attention for this worthy cause. If you can help get the word out (or bring the funds in) through what you do for a living, please contact our philanthropic events production team at iHeartMoms so we can join forces.
